Jukai:
Receiving the Precepts
Buddha photo

Jukai, or Receiving the Precepts, is a year-long process of commitment to a particular relationship to our life experience. This process culminates in a formal ceremony, in which participants publicly affirm their intention to live mindfully and ethically. Students who Receive the Precepts acknowledge the reality of their life history and affirm their willingness to respond to life with as much wisdom and compassion as possible. Jukai is a commitment to a perspective, to a sensibility, and to a way of life.

Students sew a rakasu, a formal representation of the Buddha's robes, with the help of a sewing teacher. They also participate in regular meetings with their teacher and fellow Jukai students. Prospective students will normally have meditated for at least one year and have participated in at least one practice period at Everyday Dharma. They will also have an ongoing relationship with the Head Teacher.
